Journal of Digital Design Research (JDDR) is a peer reviewed interdisciplinary journal dedicated to high quality scholarship on digital technologies shaping contemporary design. The journal publishes research on computational and AI assisted design, extended reality (VR, AR, MR) and immersive visualization, digital prototyping and fabrication (including 3D printing), and reality capture workflows such as 3D scanning and digital twins. JDDR welcomes empirical studies, methodological and technical papers, critical reviews, and theory building that connect these tools to design cognition, user experience, education, and professional practice across interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, graphic and communication design, fashion, and related design disciplines.

Focus and scope

JDDR publishes original contributions that advance knowledge in areas including (but not limited to):

  • AI and computational methods in design ideation, synthesis, evaluation, and decision making

  • Generative and parametric design workflows and design automation

  • XR mediated design processes, prototyping, collaboration, training, and evaluation

  • Digital fabrication and material workflows, including design for additive manufacturing

  • Reality capture, documentation, and reconstruction pipelines (3D scanning, photogrammetry, point clouds)

  • Digital twins for simulation, visualization, and performance feedback

  • Design education and pedagogy integrating digital tools, including assessment and learning outcomes

  • Human centered evaluation of digital design systems (usability, experience, cognition, accessibility, ethics)

JDDR encourages methodological transparency and replicability. Authors are invited to provide detailed workflow documentation and, where appropriate, share datasets, code, and supplementary materials.

Open access policy

JDDR is published as an open access journal using Open Journal Systems (OJS). All articles are freely available online upon publication. JDDR does not charge any submission fees or article processing charges (no publication fees).

Copyright and licensing

Authors retain copyright of their work. Articles are published under a Creative Commons license specified by the journal, which permits sharing and reuse with appropriate attribution. The license applied to each article is stated in the published version.

Sponsorship and disclosure

JDDR discloses all sponsorships, institutional affiliations, and potential conflicts of interest. Any financial support or partnerships related to journal operations will be transparently listed on the journal website.

Privacy statement

JDDR collects personal information necessary for editorial operations, including manuscript handling, peer review, and publication. The journal uses this information only for legitimate editorial purposes and does not sell or share personal data with third parties except as required for publication services. Reviewers and authors are expected to maintain confidentiality during the peer review process.

History

JDDR was established to provide a dedicated venue for rigorous, design centered research at the intersection of digital innovation and the design disciplines. The journal supports scholarship that bridges research and practice through validated methods, prototypes, and measurable outcomes.
