Hazards of Cross-Cultural Communication Failure in Aviation
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examined the potential effects of cross-cultural communication differences on flight deck operations, with particular attention to how culturally homogeneous and heterogeneous flight crews operate across different cultural environments. Although Crew Resource Management (CRM) has been substantially influenced by Western cultural norms, particularly those associated with North America and Europe, modern aviation increasingly places pilots from diverse cultural backgrounds in multinational flight deck environments. Although previous research has identified differences in aviation operations and communication across cultures, much of the existing literature has focused on culturally homogeneous crews. This study addresses this gap by examining communication-related responses among culturally heterogeneous crews. A survey was distributed to 400 pilots employed by Part 121 scheduled airlines or their international equivalents. Participants were categorized into a culturally homogeneous reference group and three comparison groups based on the cultural environment in which they worked. Countries were classified using a derived score based on three of Hofstede's cultural dimensions: Power Distance (PD), Uncertainty Avoidance (UA), and Individualism (IDV). The findings indicated statistically significant differences between the culturally homogeneous reference group and the heterogeneous comparison groups across multiple survey questions. In addition, research findings suggest that cultural factors may contribute to differences in flight deck communication beyond language differences alone. The findings have implications for the application of CRM in culturally diverse flight operations. Current CRM approaches have been substantially informed by assumptions associated with low Power Distance and high Individualism and may not fully account for the cultural contexts in which multinational crews operate. Although existing CRM principles provide an important foundation for flight crew coordination and safety, the findings suggest a need for CRM approaches that are more adaptable to the cultural and operational contexts of individual operators. Further qualitative research is warranted to examine specific communication experiences and identify how cultural differences may contribute to communication challenges on the modern flight deck.
