Philosophy & Vision

It is the vision of the Editors for the Collegiate Aviation Review International to be the premier academic publication for aviation faculty.  The Editors aim to foster a positive author experience to improve the quality of scholarly and creative works through mentorship.

Journal Scope

The Editors encourage a diversity of manuscript submissions, based on the interest of authors, industry professionals, and the journal's readers.  Publication consideration will be given to all manuscripts provided topics are reasonably applicable to aviation, aerospace, or aeronautics.

Publication Frequency

Normal Publication Schedule

The journal will release a Fall and Spring issue each year, with manuscripts published on a rolling basis until issues are filled.  Authors may submit manuscripts for publicaction consideration at any time.  Manuscripts accepted for publication will be included in current or future issues in order based on the date the author furnishes a publication-quality manuscript, as determined by the editors.

Special Issuance/Proceedings

Presenters at the University Aviation Association Annual Conference will be invited to submit proceedings manuscripts for publication consideration in a special issuance of the journal within 60 days following the conclusion of the conference.

Open Access Policy

The Collegiate Aviation Review International proudly provides free, open-access to all scholarly works and does not impose fees or other charges on authors, content creators, or readers.  Any individual may read, download, copy, disseminate, print, search, link, or otherwise use published scholarly works.

Types of Scholarly Works

The Collegiate Aviation Review International publishes the following categories of scholarly articles:

Peer-Reviewed Article.  Manuscript contains original research that has not previously been published by the author(s).  These works undergo a double-blind peer review process in which at least two or more subject matter experts provide substantive critique of the methodology and content of the manuscript and provide a publication recommendation to the editor.  Based on reviewer recommendations and feedback, the editor makes a publication decision that can include acceptance of the manuscript in its current form, request minor modifications, request significant modifications, or reject the manuscript.  The authors are furnished with specific, substantive, and actionable feedback designed to improve the quality of the scholarly work.  Prior to publication of the work, the manuscript will also receive copyediting to correct typos, spelling, grammar, language, or other related errors.  See the Peer-Reviewed Article Evaluation crtieria.

Peer-Reviewed Practice. Manuscript contains an original idea, method, strategy, or other practice within the context of aviation practical or academic instruction that has not previously been published by the author(s).  Proposed practices need not necessarily be supported by formal research methodologies.  The purpose of this submission is to facilitate a moderated exchange of ideas that promotes new approaches to practical application of aviation practices (such as flight instruction or classroom teaching, etc).  These works undergo a double-blind peer review process in which at least two subject matter experts provide substantive critique of the proposed practice and content of the manuscript and provide a publication recommendation to the editor.  Based on the reviewer recommendations and feedback, the editor makes a publication decision.  The authors are furnished with specific, substantive, and actionable feedback designed to improve the quality of the scholarly work.  Prior to publication of the work, the manuscript will also receive copyediting to correct typos, spelling, grammar, language, or other related errors. See the Peer-Reviewed Practice Evaluation criteria.

Position Paper.  Manuscript contains original ideas or opinions supported by cited research or literature; and, has not previously been published by the author(s).  These works undergo an editorial review process in which the editors or members of the editorial staff review the manuscript to determine the topic falls within the journal's scope, complies with formatting requirements, and is free from editorial errors.  See the Position Paper Evaluation criteria.

Literature Review. Manuscript synthesizes existing research, literature, or other scholarly works and has not been previously published by the author(s).  These works undergo an editorial review process similar to Position Papers.  See the Literature Review Evaluation criteria.

Book Review.  Manuscript that overviews the topics, summarizes the thesis, and provides critical analysis of an aviation text; and, has not been previously published by the author(s).  These works undergo an editorial review process similar to Position Papers.  See the Book Review Evaluation criteria.

Editorial.  Manuscript that contains original ideas or opinions that have not been previously published by the author(s). These works undergo an editorial review process similar to Position Papers.

Proceedings.  Presenters at the University Aviation Association Annual Conference will be invited to submit proceedings manuscripts for publication consideration in a regular or special issuance of the Collegiate Aviation Review International.  Draft Proceedings manuscripts will be accepted for up to 60 days following the conclusion of the UAA Annual Conference.  The editors will coordinate with authors to ensure Proceedings manuscripts are of publishable quality by January 1 following the UAA Annual Conference.
