History and use of direct democracy in Oklahoma

Abstract

Oklahoma has a rich history of direct democracy. It was the first slate to incorporate direct democracy into its constitution and it has been used frequently throughout the past century. This paper reexamines the origin of the initiative and referendum and how they were both used to implement major policy changes in the state.
